The Colonial Congress

Representatives from all three major governing powers have come with the new colonists, in order to help establish the beginnings of a colonial government. You are here as part of the Colonial Congress faction. First and foremost, you are here to support the colony in its earliest days. You want to see Phaelos III establish itself, stabilize, and begin to find its identity as a society and a culture. You are strongly independent, and care much more for the colony and the colonists than about larger questions of interplanetary war. You can already tell that the Commonwealth and Galactic League factions are going to bog themselves down in partisan bickering, and honestly, you're perfectly fine with that. While they keep themselves busy with squabbling, you'll make sure the actual business of running the colony happens smoothly.

Of course, you're hopeful that when the time comes to choose, the colonists will vote for Phaelos III to join the Colonial Congress, but honestly that's not as important to you as them being happy with the choice they make. You're willing to support alternate proposals, including potentially one you've heard about Phaelos III becoming a second homeworld for the Gyra refugees. When it comes to day-to-day politics, your primary interests are those that support the colonists and their lives. Your focus is on social welfare, medical access, and supporting the arts and humanities. When the people are happy and cared for, the colony thrives.

Homeworld: Baryos
Variant: Navigator
Character Coach: Jacob Bouvier ([email protected])
Description:
You come originally from the sprawling and complex Sapora family, long one of the most powerful families of Baryos, with a history going back hundreds of years. The Saporas have been leaders, heroes, ministers, and more. Now, as the galaxy splinters and spreads, so do the Saporas. Your only sibling, T. Sapora ((Liza Jaye)), was still young enough when you left home that the two of you were never that close. There is also the offshoot Auberro branch, including your cousin L. Auberro ((Jules Robins)), who went into business with Enterios before making like most of the family and joining Baryosi politics.

Like many Saporas, your career began in the U.A.W. Navy, but it certainly did not end there. You enrolled as a Navigator, and eventually became part of a triad of pilots, flying the majestic capital ship Ascendant Dream. Your copilots were Lia Jo, a colonial, and V. Gorai ((Tara Leederman)), an Agerran. The three of you flew perfectly together, minds blending to become one. It was a time of peace, and the U.A.W. Navy served, it seemed, little purpose beyond the ceremonial.

The outbreak of the Homeworld War changed that. The Dream’s crew was primarily Agerran, like most ships of the line, and it joined the Agerran side. Gorai and Jo pleaded with you to stay with the ship, but you couldn’t. You wouldn’t betray your people and your Homeworld, though it nearly tore your mind to pieces to do it. You returned to Baryos, and were soon assigned to the Distant Light, a converted colony ship, one of the few capital ships that remained to the U.A.W. Navy.

You tried to take up piloting again, but you found that you couldn’t. Your mind has forged connections with Jo and Gorai, and wasn’t up to building new ones. Maybe it was the implants, maybe it was the trauma, but regardless, you’ve never piloted again. Instead you joined the command crew, and by the end of the war, you became Captain of the Distant Light, promoted after your predecessor was killed by an Agerran boarding party during the Battle of Baryos.

You were a good Captain, and stayed with your ship after the war. But your faith in Baryos and the U.A.W. did not survive the war. Your old copilot Jo reached out to you, a year after the war, and you met her on Windrock. After serving briefly with the Agerrans, Jo had fled the war, and spent the rest of her time back in the colonies. She explained to you the plight of the colonies, their need for support after being ignored during the war. You took the chance, and put things to a vote with the crew. The crew were behind you, and the Distant Light became the Colonial Congress’ first capital ship.

Baryos was already nearly out of the funds required to maintain the Light, but the Congress wasn’t much better off. That meant that you needed outside investment to keep your ship flying. You turned to the Enterios Corporation, and negotiated a deal with N. Stormsmith ((Erik Chen)). Stormsmith had helped out with the initial retrofitting of the Light into a warship, and had stayed aboard the ship for some time as an observer.

You wound up involved with Stormsmith, in various intimate capacities, and have remained so ever since. A decade after the war, you helped engineer the official transfer of ownership from the Congress to Enterios. In practice, that meant little, as you remained the Captain at the time, and the ship continued to do what it had always done, traveling between the Colonies, maintaining the wormhole network. Some tried to spin your relationship with Stormsmith into a scandal at that point, but it never took hold.

Not long after that, you decided to make the switch back into politics. You’d been resisting it for years, but it was time to follow your family tradition. You were determined to stay with the Colonial Congress, however. Out here, your name meant little, and you were proud of that. You earned your Captaincy on your own merit, and now you’ve earned your position as official head of the Colonial Congress Delegation to Phaelos III on your own merit. You were a Speaker for Windrock for a few years, and now you’re ready to move on to this new project.

There are, of course, many complications. When you’re a Sapora, nothing is ever simple. There are still swirling accusations of impropriety towards you and Stormsmith, who is now the head of all of Enterios. No one seems to care that it was your negotiations that helped make this mission possible. Then there’s your younger sibling, who wound up going into journalism. They’ve changed their name to Aurora, in order to avoid accusations of bias towards you. Which is reasonable, as they’re one of the editors of the Colonial News Bulletin. You’ll keep their secret parentage, but you find it a little ridiculous.

The latest complication to be added to your life is F. Sapora ((JPol Polin)), a young relative. They’re the child of a cousin who moved out to the Colonies, and though it annoys you, you owe them a favor. So you’ve taken Sapora along on this mission, and agreed to mentor them. They’re smart, and passionate, but painfully idealistic and naive. You were like that once, when you first joined the Navy, maybe, but that was a long time ago. These days you’re pragmatic, efficient, and know what it takes to run a colony. Sometimes it means bureaucracy, sometimes it means cutting deals, and sometimes it means doing things you don’t want to do. It doesn’t leave a lot of room for idealistic naivete.

You also have a difficult relationship with A. Valira ((Jez Zarnofsky)), who Stormsmith appointed to be the new Captain of the Distant Light for this voyage. You trust Stormsmith to have chosen someone worthy, and Valira is one of the potential heirs to the company, but even so… that was your chair for so long. It will always feel strange to see someone else sitting in it.

Stranger still is seeing Gorai again. You hadn’t seen your friend and copilot since nearly the start of the war. Now they’re here, and not only that, they’re one of the heads of the Agerran delegation. You’re going to have to work with them, deal with them, talk to them. Decades-old separation traumas are reactivating, and you’re not sure how to cope. You’ve sent a message to Jo, who retired to an outlying colony, but haven’t heard back. But you’re going to have to figure out something to do about Gorai, and soon.

Light: You’re a natural born leader, pragmatic and efficient at solving any problem that’s thrown your way. You know you’ll be able to handle any situation thrown your way, and you’re willing to work to earn both trust and recognition.

Dark: You’re a natural politician; you’re willing to compromise on your ideals and manipulate people and situations to achieve your goals. You’re scarred by the war and the separation trauma that induced with Jo and Gorai.

Questions:
  1. Do you feel betrayed by Gorai and Jo choosing to support Agerre?
  2. How are you coping with giving up your Captainship of the Distant Light?
  3. What is the most important thing you feel F. Sapora needs to learn under your guidance?
  4. Do you plan to confront Gorai?
  5. Are you ashamed of using your relationship with Stormsmith to further your own goals?
