The Crew of the Dancing Crab

The Windlock Commune is an odd melting pot, a place where people from all over Zé come together. It's built on the wreck of an old raft, and drifts barely above the toxic clouds that cover so much of Zé. It's a haven for artists, dissidents, and those who don't quite fit in where they're supposed to. It's not a bad metaphor for all of you. Most of you drifted into Windlock at some point or another, but you didn't quite stay. Somehow, you all wound up together, crewing a beat up old jumpship, but honestly, there's nowhere you'd rather be. The ship keeps flying, and that's what matters. You take all kinds of odd jobs, mostly smuggling things around the galaxy. When money gets tight, you don't look too close at the cargo, and you know you've wound up carrying a few things on and off of Din Shass over the years that you maybe shouldn't have. But that's how the world works.

There are a few things that tie you all together. Most importantly, none of you can stand the Agerrans. They've ruled your planet for two decades, and they need to be gone. That's not to say you're going to go to war against them, but, well, if the opportunity comes up, you're certainly not going to back down from it. You all know that much about each other. You've been flying together long enough that you might as well be family at this point. That said, some of you keep secrets, and that's alright. People talk when they're ready, and you're not going to force anything.

For the last few years, most of your trips to Zé were to smuggle Dawnlighters and archaeologists who wanted to see the planet up close. All that went wild a few months ago. You were contacted by a pair of Gyra refugees, I. Ryf-av ((Aaron Sunshine)) and and L. Ryf-av ((Abigail Stone)), who hired you to pull off a completely ridiculous job: they wanted you to rescue A. Ya-rett, one of the most radical leaders of the Gyra refugee movement, who had been imprisoned in the Stormgate Temple for years. To be honest, you're still not entirely sure why you did it, but you pulled it off. You had help from an insider--R. En-fi ((Ivan Wong))--a Gyra-born Agerran officer, who provided you with guard rotations, maps, and so on.

It took months of planning, and was dangerous beyond all reason. You suited up in Sunken suits and made the dangerous trek through the Miasma (carefully avoiding the deadly giant crabs your ship is named for), then scaled the peak and approached the Stormgate Temple from below. As far as you know, no one else has ever made it in, let alone back out again. You did, though, and you got out with Ya-rett ((Richard Dupell)) alive and intact. He came with company, though. Turns out that while imprisoned he'd made an unlikely friend, who he wouldn't leave without. So now you have two strange passengers--a Gyra radical, and the legendary Agerran Admiral Therra ((Matt Cook)), who oversaw the destruction of Gyr in the first place, imprisoned by his own people for decades.

It took you another few weeks to get them offworld, but you finally did, and you've brought them to Phaelos III to meet up with the Ryf-avs and make the delivery. This is your wildest job yet, and you hope the pay will be worth it. Even if it isn't, though, it'll be worth it to stick it to the Agerrans. Once that's all done, though, you'll need a new job. Hopefully one will show up soon enough.

Description:
Your parents never meant to stay on Zé. They were Gyra shipbuilders, and had come to Zé to spend time amongst the Unmoored, studying and learning from them, and helping repair the mighty skyrafts. Then the end of the war came, and suddenly you were refugees. You were barely a toddler, too young to understand what had happened, but you knew your parents were sad, and that made you sad.

The Unmoored took you in and raised you as one of their own. You befriended J. Suhesa ((Hakan Seyalioglu)), child of Unmoored merchants, friends of your family. You never felt like you belonged, though. The Unmoored did their best to treat you the same as any other child, but at night, your parents would tell you stories of the great seas. They were strange fantasies to you, a child of clouds.

When you were a teenager, your powers first began to manifest. You knew enough of the world to know to keep them secret. What would your family think, after all? Your parents had told you plenty of times about the horrors unleashed by Innates. How would they react if they knew what kind of monster you were? You thought about telling Suhesa, but before you could make up your mind, they vanished, off to join the Windlock Commune.

You wanted to do something useful, find some way to give back to your community, so you took up training as a medic. Pirate attacks had been happening more and more often, so it seemed like something important to focus on, a way you could stay in the good graces of the rest of the raft. After all, it was either that or head to Windlock. And for a time, it worked.

Everything fell apart in one particularly vicious pirate attack. They boarded the raft in the night, and when the alarm sounded, bloodshed broke out almost immediately. You were on a late shift in the medical tent, and headed for your family’s tent as quickly as you could. You arrived before a trio of pirates did, but only by a moment. You couldn’t help yourself, and blasted the pirates off the raft, out into the wind.

The pirates were repelled, and the raft was saved, but your secret was out. No one would talk to you, or look at you the same way. Even your parents could barely hold a conversation with you. It was beyond uncomfortable. You didn’t know what else to do, so you fled. You took a cloudskimmer, and you made your way to the Windlock Commune. You found Suhesa again, and helped them out as a runner for supplies to Windlock. You liked your time there. People didn’t ask questions, and that was okay with you.

You still didn’t feel at home, though. You had so many unanswered questions. When Suhesa took the stars aboard the Dancing Crab and invited you to come, you went. The ship became more of a home than any you’d ever really had, but you still have so many secrets, and keep so much to yourself. You have a role on the ship, and that helps you stay calm. You’re the ship’s medic, and people on the ship seem to get beat up a lot. So you’ve certainly gotten better at your craft over the years.

You’ve also found a kindred spirit in P. Kehas ((Caitlin Watts)), a Sunken who joined the Paladins of Dawn. Kehas has been teaching you the ways of the Order, and training you in sword work. The more you learn of the Order, the better they sound to you. Like on Windlock, they wouldn’t ask questions of you, but might guide you to understand yourself better. Kehas has become something of a mentor to you, despite you both being about the same age.

You haven’t told Kehas--or anyone else--yet, but you’ve been considering leaving the ship to join the Order. You’d have to find the right group, and find the right place, but... you’ve been on the move for so long. It would be so nice to stay in one place, and find somewhere that could actually be a home. You’d like it if it were somewhere with oceans, too. You’ve dreamed of oceans for so long, and you can only resist that call for so long.

Light: You are a kind medic who puts people back together when they are hurt. You do your best to look after others, even if they don’t always look out for you.
Dark: Everyone who has ever learned the truth about you has forced you to flee. Your secret makes you suffer. Are you prepared to keep your secret safe?
Relations:
J. Suhesa ((Hakan Seyalioglu))
P. Kehas ((Caitlin Watts))
Questions:
Will you ever tell anyone your secret?
What does the Order of Dawn mean to you?
How do you define freedom?
Would you provide medical care to someone who knew your secret?
What would you do to keep your Innate status hidden?
