Stardust Shipping / the Seventeen Hands

The law can never be all things to all people. Sometimes, things have to happen behind the scenes, under the table, and in the shadows. That’s just the way the galaxy works, and all of you know that. Not all of you work for organized crime, but all of you understand the rules of it. Keepings thing clean helps everyone stay free and profitable, and when everyone’s turning a profit, everyone’s happy.

That mostly means giving respect to the big fish--the Seventeen Hands and the Downcity Partnership. The rivalry between the two syndicates has gone on for decades, and isn’t slowing any time soon. On Din Shass, it’s open war from time to time, but when you’re offworld, you keep things clean. You don’t kill in public. You don’t pick fights with Paladins or government officials. You keep things to quiet bribes, favors for friends, and dealing technology that’s maybe not quite legal or licensed.

The Seventeen Hands are making a play for Phaelos III, and while the Partnership is sure to respond, they don’t seem to have yet. Coordinating the efforts from remote is K. Koteiv ((Sharon Underberg)), the Third Hand, with G. Nova ((Nancy Calvert-Warren)), the Eleventh Hand, running the show on the ground. For two of the Hands to be personally involved means serious business, and anyone involved on Phaelos knows it. But of course, the general public doesn’t know the Hands are here, and doesn’t need to. As far as most folk know, you’re here to help Stardust Shipping establish a new trade route, and nothing sketchier than that.

Player: Sharon Underberg
Name: K. Koteiv
Group: Seventeen Hands
Homeworld: Agerre

Variant: Navigator
Character Coach: Toby Gurl ([email protected])
Description:
You were always proud to be Agerran. You were a Navigator for Naval jumpships even before the war, flying missions and helping keep the galaxy safe. During the war, you earned a promotion to a capital ship--the proudest moment of your life. There were three of you--you, Avia, and Veko ((Craig Eisenberger)). Together, you piloted one of the best ships of the line through some of the most brutal battles of the war. The three of you didn’t always see eye to eye, but the more you flew together, the more you became of one mind, linked by the ship’s drive.

The end of the war almost ended you as well. You were there when Gyr burned, your ship launching a frontal assault on the orbital shipyards. In that battle, the ship took massive damage, with multiple impacts near the warp core. As Gyr’s surface turned molten, the call came from the captain to retreat. The three of you argued, with you calling to abandon ship, saying the drive was too damaged, while Avia insisted there was one more jump in her. Veko were the deciding vote, and did what they always did: followed the captain’s orders. You still blame Veko for that. If Veko had stood up to the Captain, sided with you, maybe things would’ve turned out differently. What happened next was Veko’s fault.

Avia was right, technically. The ship did make that last jump, but Avia didn’t. The backlash from keeping the warp drive running killed Avia outright, and crippled you. You felt her die, and felt as your body turned in on itself, your nervous system completely overloaded, your muscles tearing themselves apart. It was agony, and you barely survived. Then in the following days, as you lay in the hospital, you learned that your attack had just been a distraction for the real attack. That was all. Your ship was scuttled and your life ruined over a distraction. Worse--one that worked too well. Agerre declared the war over.

Then your Homeworld abandoned you. They provided almost nothing for your recovery, leaving you to languish in recovery, barely able to move, your body a wreck. You might have lain there forever, but you were contacted by the Seventeen Hands. They wanted access to your implants, and were willing to pay you plenty. They gave you more cybernetic augmentations to keep you alive, though further damaging your mobility. You soon learned that the Hands wanted to study you so they could start making Navigators of their own. You agreed to help them with their project, but in return, you wanted in. They were willing to make the deal, though you wouldn’t have taken no for an answer anyway.

Over the next twenty years, you worked your way up through the organization, taking more and more power for yourself. You’ve done terrible things to get where you are, but you don’t care. You were left for dead and abandoned by the Homeworld you fought for, destroyed by a cruel twist of fate. Your whole life since then has been one long act of revenge against the universe for that.

You’re the Third Hand now, with only two above you. You’ve been brokering deals from remote, coordinating various schemes and operations. At this point you run the entire Navigator-making system, and are overseeing Stardust Shipping. You’re trying to set up a deal with Mos Lara Kan ((Laurie Rich)), one of the heads of the Galactic League, to supply some of your Navigators to the League’s new Navy. You’ve worked with Kan before, helping get her elected. You like her. She’s willing to be cutthroat when she has to be. Besides, the Navigators you’re making are better than the formally trained ones. They’re more flexible and creative, know how to actually improvise under fire.

G. Nova ((Nancy Calvert-Warren)), the Eleventh Hand, is effective but dangerous. You know she’s trying to usurp your place, and you’re not about to let her do that. Managing her is all about giving her enough room to accomplish tasks, without letting her get too full of herself. She’s taken to employing Veko, your old partner, as her bodyguard. It still hurts to see Veko up and moving around when you can’t. It stings. You have no qualms about the fact that you’ve told C. Link ((Daniel Dziubinski)), an information broker, to keep an eye on Nova for you, and report back on anything she does. If she steps out of line, or tries to take you down, well… you’ll be ready. You have what’s yours, and you’re not going to let anyone take it from you.

Light: You were once a talented navigator, before your accident. Now you use your talents to navigate other problems. You’re smart, dedicated, and patient. You’ve worked your way to where you are now, and you’re not going to take shit from anyone.
Dark: You’ve done some terrible things to get here. At this point, you don’t care. You have what you want, but there’s still more. There’s always more… and you’re willing to do whatever is necessary...
Questions:

  1. How do you deal with failure or insubordination?
  2. Would you ever take revenge on Agerre for what happened to you?
  3. What do you do with those that get in your way?
  4. Should subordinates be creative, or should they follow your strict guidance?
