Stardust Shipping / the Seventeen Hands
The law can never be all things to all people. Sometimes, things have to happen behind the scenes, under the table, and in the shadows. That’s just the way the galaxy works, and all of you know that. Not all of you work for organized crime, but all of you understand the rules of it. Keepings thing clean helps everyone stay free and profitable, and when everyone’s turning a profit, everyone’s happy.
That mostly means giving respect to the big fish--the Seventeen Hands and the Downcity Partnership. The rivalry between the two syndicates has gone on for decades, and isn’t slowing any time soon. On Din Shass, it’s open war from time to time, but when you’re offworld, you keep things clean. You don’t kill in public. You don’t pick fights with Paladins or government officials. You keep things to quiet bribes, favors for friends, and dealing technology that’s maybe not quite legal or licensed.
The Seventeen Hands are making a play for Phaelos III, and while the Partnership is sure to respond, they don’t seem to have yet. Coordinating the efforts from remote is K. Koteiv ((Sharon Underberg)), the Third Hand, with G. Nova ((Nancy Calvert-Warren)), the Eleventh Hand, running the show on the ground. For two of the Hands to be personally involved means serious business, and anyone involved on Phaelos knows it. But of course, the general public doesn’t know the Hands are here, and doesn’t need to. As far as most folk know, you’re here to help Stardust Shipping establish a new trade route, and nothing sketchier than that.

Description:
People are shit. Some people just try to hide it, or lie about it. Not you, though. You know everyone’s shit, and that includes you. You’ve been a dozen different things over the course of your life. Some of them you were half-decent at. Sometimes you made some friends, but most of the time they came away hating you. You were too damn honest for them, and called them on their shit. That’s how it is when you know the world is shit, and everyone in it is shit too.
You were a big game hunter on Ottsalia, once. You’d lead expeditions out in the jungle with your partner Q. Dreamtangler ((Dave White)), mostly for corporate bigwigs who wanted some exciting danger in their lives. It was a messy gig, and sometimes bloody, but it paid good money. Didn’t last, though. Some CEO got eaten by a plant, despite that you told him a dozen times not to poke it, and the company tried to sue you.
So you got offworld, and did other things. Eventually you wound up falling into racing. You were the first mate of the Windlancer for a few years. Fastest damn ship in the galaxy. Beautiful Gyra thing, cut through the sky like nothing you’d been on before or since. You were going by M. Zenith in those days. Then one day Captain Av-ey ((Jeeyon Shim)) caught you sabotaging a rival ship while in dock. You didn’t see why the Captain was so upset. Other ship was gonna lose anyway, this just made sure of it. Wasn’t the first time you’d sabotaged another racer, just the first time you’d got caught.
But Av-ey kicked you off the ship anyway. You scammed your way into a ship of your own, and tried to race out of revenge, but your new ship couldn’t remotely keep up with the Windlance. You gave up on that, though you’re still plenty pissed. You won a few races, but eventually you got busted on sabotage again, and this time publicly. You got booted from the racing league.
You still needed something to do to keep the ship flying, though, so you turned to smuggling. You’ve been flying for the Seventeen Hands--either under the radar or more legitimately as part of Stardust Shipping--for a good year and a half now. It’s good pay, and you don’t look closely at the cargo. Your ship’s still a piece of shit, but she’s your piece of shit. You call her the Pearl Ambassador, mostly because it makes you laugh.
Your crew are a mess, and you halfway can’t stand them, but they haven’t quit on you yet. You’ve got Dreamtangler back with you, for whatever that’s worth. The other two are a pair of bounty hunters--G. Volti ((Andy Erikson)) and and who never seem to stop bickering. More than once you’ve threatened to throw them both out an airlock if they don’t shut up, but they’re handy enough in a fight, so you put up with them. Then there was Yolari, your Navigator, born and raised on Din Shass and trained up by the Hands.
Recently everything went a bit to shit. Moreso than usual. You were on a mostly routine mission for your boss, G. Nova ((Nancy Calvert-Warren)), and you ran afoul of a bunch of Agerran jumpships, way out where they shouldn’t be. You ran, and they gave chase. You the Ambassador to make a blind jump, which was maybe stupid and dangerous, but it worked. You came out at some random planet, which looked habitable enough.
You were paranoid that the Agerrans were still on your tail, though, so you dumped your secret cargo. Not the cargo you were carrying for Nova--you kept that. But even secretly from Nova, you had a case full of really rare Ancient artifacts that you picked up from a fence on Hinge, and the Agerrans would kill you for those. So you threw them out in a drop pod for the surface, and made a note of the coordinates to come back for them later. Then you jumped back to Din Shass. Unfortunately, the wormhole wasn’t as stable as you’d thought, and thought you made it, the jump killed your Navigator. Shame, that. Yolari wasn’t particularly nice, but they were competent enough.
Turns out the random planet you found was somewhere important, and suddenly you’re in the limelight. You’re trying to figure out how to parley this into something bigger, but you haven’t quite got it set. Nova sold the coordinates to Enterios for a heap of money, but she says she’ll only cut you in on it if you get the artifacts back. Nova even gave you their personal bodyguard to be your Navigator for the flight. Z. Veko ((Craig Eisenberger)) is a real shit, but they got you here in one piece. And here you are, back on Phaelos III. You’ll get those artifacts, sure. You want to make sure no one else gets them. But will you give them to Nova? That you’re not sure of yet. They’re a hell of a bargaining chip, after all.
Light: You’re creative as hell, and can always think your way out of a mess. Sometimes those messes are of your own making, but whatever. You’re also a damn fine cook. You’re brutally honest, whether people want you to be or not.
Dark: You look out for yourself, first, foremost, and always. You don’t care much for other people, and don’t have much interest in things like morality or “the greater good.” They just get in the way, and you don’t bother with things that get in your way.
