The Corporation / Distant Light

The Enterios Corporation is providing the initial funding for the establishment of the Phaelos III colony, as well as owning the Distant Light, the massive colony ship transporting the colonists. Enterios has funded massive endeavors over its century-and-a-half history, but rarely of such galactic importance or political visibility. As such, the Enterios Board of Directors are watching the colony extremely closely, and the CEO, N. Stormsmith ((Erik Chen)), is accompanying the expedition in person.

Description:
Everything you have, you earned. You’re proud of that fact. You were born on an outlying colony, and worked your way up from scratch. Your parents were supportive, but never understood you. They were small-minded and unambitious, content with their lot. You never were. You studied hard, and earned a scholarship to the University of Titan’s Passage, on Baryos. You took a job with Enterios, and stayed with them through the war. Over the years, you distinguished yourself, and your superiors took notice.

It was never one thing, not a singular grand move or scheme. Your ascension was the work of patient decades. In its infancy, Enterios was a family-run corporation, but, like everything born on Ottsalia, that changed. Today, Enterios is your company. Seven years ago, the Board of Directors appointed you as the CEO, replacing your predecessor on her retirement. Under your leadership, Enterios has flourished, and continued to grow. You have established the first Enterios headquarters in the Agerran Commonwealth since the Homeworld War, and deepened the relationship between Enterios and the Galactic League. You have expanded research and development, and fund half a dozen labs at UTP. Profits are up across the board. Yes, the rival companies--Triskele, Vasala, Stardust--are also growing, but, well, a rising economy bolsters everyone who’s paying attention.

You genuinely believe in the importance of your work. The Homeworld War proved that governments cannot be trusted to focus on the good of humanity. Humanity is inherently greedy, a fact you have never tried to deny. Governments will always, in the end, fall to squabbling and infighting. Which is not to say that corporations are above that, but rather that corporations can be controlled. You can decide how the corporation operates, what it prioritizes and focuses on. Your focus is on finding ways to preserve and continue the growth of humanity as a species.

That means funding research into Augmentation and Dynavolution, as well as Ancient artifacts. That means reaching out to all three major governments, and funding this new colony. That means finding ways to suppress competition and instability, where necessary. Morality is not a concept that troubles you--you are a pragmatist, and sometimes the most effective solution is not the most pleasant. You have never been afraid to get your hands dirty, and that has rewarded you strongly over the years.

You have been intimately involved in one capacity or another with B. Sapora ((Sophie Monahan)) for nearly three decades now. At first you were coworkers, as you acted as one of the liaisons between Enterios and the U.A.W. during the war, helping oversee the retrofitting of the Distant Light into a warship. Sapora was its captain during the latter parts of the war, and you stayed aboard for sometime as an observer. A decade after the war, you coordinated Enterios’ re-purchasing of the ship, and now, its return to its original function as a colony ship.

There have been attempts to make your relationship with Sapora into a scandal, as Sapora currently is a high-ranking representative to the Colonial Congress. Those accusations have never particularly bothered you. You do business with the Galactic League as well, and have worked extensively with Ancillary Consul Mos Lara Kan ((Laurie Rich)), but no one cries foul about that. Humans have the strangest double standards.

For a long time, that did leave you without a connection to the Agerran Commonwealth. You’ve been able to remedy that of late, though. A few years ago, you recruited A. Zaivan ((Rebecca Roycroft)), a rising politician within the Agerran Ministry, to spy on your behalf. Zaivan has been extremely useful, letting you know details of Agerran policy well before they’re announced. In return, you’re both paying Zaivan in credits and supplying Enterios goods and weapons to their regional military buildup on Agerre. It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement.

These days, much of your focus is on your legacy. You are not ready to retire, far from it, but you know the time has come to appoint an heir. Two strong candidates have emerged from the field of possibilities, and you are preparing to choose between them. A. Valira ((Jez Zarnofsky)) and T. Yanora ((Ashley Kaufman)) are both brilliant, passionate, and driven. Like you, they have earned their positions through hard work and dedication. You do not agree with them on everything, but they are competent, and you value that above most things.

But having two heirs is a recipe for infighting and instability, so you must choose one of them. As such, you are testing them with this mission. You have appointed Valira as Captain of the Distant Light, taking on Sapora’s old position. Valira is responsible for the logistics of the colony, keeping everything moving smoothly. Yanora is to serve as medical chief of both ship and colony, overseeing physical and emotional wellness for all the colonists. You will be observing both of them carefully as the colony begins, and will be giving them regular reviews. You’ve informed both of them of the stakes, just to make sure that they’re putting in their best work.

Light: You are loving, passionate, and enterprising. You want to bring out the best in people and things. You want to make the people around you better.
Dark: You take advantage of the world around you at its expense. You make people better, just so you can use them to advance. You refuse to let go of power.
