The Colonial News Bulletin

For thirty years, the Colonial News Bulletin has been the most trusted source for news throughout the Circinus Galaxy. Now, with the establishment of the first new colony since before the Homeworld War, the Bulletin will be on the ground, reporting on everything as it happens. Two of the senior editors of the Bulletin are here, with a rare team of dedicated full-time journalists. You’ll be covering everything, from politics and research to personal stories and the darker underbelly of the colony. It’s an intense job, and one you’re all ready and proud to tackle.

During the game, you will actually have access to a newsroom in which to write news stories and publish them via the communicators. All players will see these articles! So we encourage you to be actual journalists--track stories and plots, conduct interviews, and get the news out to the fledgling colony. And if your articles come out biased or inaccurate? Well, that’s just part of the drama. No one said your news had to be perfect--just interesting.

Description:
You grew up on the far end of the far end, out beyond the backwater, a planet where the news barely reaches. You know there was a war a while ago, between some of the main planets, but you don’t really know who fought who or why. You’d like to know, certainly, you’re curious, but the truth is, as far as out as you’re from, that kind of news just doesn’t matter much.

But you got tired of life in the middle of nowhere. You wanted to see what was out there, what made the rest of the galaxy tick. Your parents called in some old favors, with someone they used to know. Someone offworld. Got you a ticket off planet, to Windrock, the biggest city in the colonies. Capital of the Colonial Congress, they told you.

To be honest, you find Windrock overwhelming. A little terrifying. The family friend there was a reporter, one of the heads of the Colonial News Bulletin. You spent a few months on Windrock, going through all kinds of training to learn how to be a good reporter. You took to it quick, and got real good at interviewing people about their lives. You love asking questions.

But life in the city was too much for you. You had to get out. Fortunately, an opportunity came up. The reporter who brought you in set you up with a new assignment. He set you up as the assistant to O. Lysa ((Steve McClellan)), one of the Bulletin’s star reporters. You’re going to tag along with Lysa to the newest colony world, Phaelos III, to help report on what goes on there. You’re looking forward to it. It’ll be good to get back to somewhere small, somewhere quiet. Somewhere that’s not Windrock.

Light: You’re innocent and hopeful, a fresh mind ready to take in all of the knowledge and intrigue the galaxy has to offer you. Your curiosity gets you into messes of all kinds, but your wits can get you out.

Dark: Your ignorance can be dangerous, heading into a setting filled with exclusively expert researchers, delegates, and politicians. You’re a little out of your depth, and risk getting yourself and the people looking out for you into trouble.

Questions:
  1. What are you most curious about galactic culture?
  2. Are you ever homesick for the quiet life of the colonies?
  3. Do you look up to Lysa?
  4. What kinds of reporting do you want to do? Political? Cultural? Interpersonal?

Relations:
O. Lysa ((Steve McClellan))
