The Colonial News Bulletin
For thirty years, the Colonial News Bulletin has been the most trusted source for news throughout the Circinus Galaxy. Now, with the establishment of the first new colony since before the Homeworld War, the Bulletin will be on the ground, reporting on everything as it happens. Two of the senior editors of the Bulletin are here, with a rare team of dedicated full-time journalists. You’ll be covering everything, from politics and research to personal stories and the darker underbelly of the colony. It’s an intense job, and one you’re all ready and proud to tackle.
During the game, you will actually have access to a newsroom in which to write news stories and publish them via the communicators. All players will see these articles! So we encourage you to be actual journalists--track stories and plots, conduct interviews, and get the news out to the fledgling colony. And if your articles come out biased or inaccurate? Well, that’s just part of the drama. No one said your news had to be perfect--just interesting.

Edge is not a pleasant planet for a child to grow up on. It is a cold, dark place, a world of science and isolation. Your parents moved there to do research when you were a child, and you and your sibling O. Vendette ((Austin Clerkin)) were raised in narrow corridors with windows looking out onto the darkness of space and the infinite void of the Pit. You made it offworld first, going to Baryos to go to University.
You wanted to know everything about the rest of the galaxy, and so you went into journalism. It gave you an excuse to study everything, in sharp contrast to the dark isolation of the place you had grown up. You were a sponge for knowledge, and reveled in learning everything you could. You made fast friends with T. Aurora ((Liza Jaye)), who was going by T. Sapora at that point, and N. Perso ((Peter Lofgren)). All three of you were studying politics, but for different reasons. Sapora wanted to understand their own family, Perso wanted to make a change, and you just wanted to know about all of it and report it.
After graduation, you went your separate ways. Perso went into politics on Baryos. Aurora became a reporter for the Journal of Interplanetary Affairs. You started freelancing for the Bulletin. It was a good way to make money, and let you travel the galaxy, following up on whatever leads caught your eye. It worked well for you. You and Aurora drifted apart a bit, but did your best to keep in touch, even from opposite sides of a rival desk.
Your sibling, meanwhile, had gone into research, following your parents. They reached out to you with some pretty dire news: research funding for Edge had all but dried up, and the entire colony was in danger of being abandoned. Frustratingly, this wasn’t a problem you could solve with journalism. There wasn’t a villain for you to track down and do an exposé on, beyond “economics.” Instead, you put your sibling in touch with Perso, your friend from school. Perso was able to negotiate a deal between the Galactic League and Edge to supply funding, and the colony stabilized--for the moment, anyway. More recently, things have gotten touch-and-go again, and you know your sibling has moved over to the Colonial Congress for funding. You’re still proud of having made that connection, though. You basically saved your entire planet through the power of networking!
You love working for the Bulletin. There’s always new interesting work to be done, and stories to be followed. You’ve befriended your fellow reporters, especially N. Ransha ((Stephanie DeMane)) and V. Amaranth ((Pythe Courter)). You’ve written stories with both of them, which is always a good time. Most recently, you heard about an opening in the editorial division, and you reached out to Aurora again. To your delight, Aurora took the deal, and switched sides, coming over to write for the Bulletin.
As time has gone on, you’ve begun to find your interests kept looping back towards your home. You grew up surrounded by physicists, investigating black holes and scanning the depths of the Pit. You had unanswered questions, and were well-positioned to go looking for more things. You were particularly fascinated by stories of the Falls The Shadow. Over years of investigating and following up rumors, you’ve come to believe that despite what most people say, it really did return to known space. Moreover, it’s still out there somewhere.
Your latest lead indicates that an Ottsalian researcher, P. Splicer ((Matt Fisher)), might know something. One of their old lab assistants mentioned something about Yana Kyr. Does Splicer have Kyr’s notes? You’re determined to follow up and find out. What’s more, they’ve joined the expedition to Phaelos III. So when Aurora mentioned they were looking for reporters to help set up the first office in the new colony, you leapt at the chance. There will be science aplenty to find here, Ancient ruins to document, and perhaps a lead on the true fate of the Falls The Shadow.
