The Runaways

Life on the run gets exhausting, but you can’t stop running. Not yet.

You don’t know who made you, and you don’t really know why. You were raised in a scientific research facility on a remote space station. You had only each other for comfort, and the scientists who did experiments on you, pushed you, made you try harder. They didn’t torture you, but they also didn’t particularly seem to care about you. You had classes, you learned about the outside world, and you were well-fed.

But a cage is a cage, and it had to break eventually. You organized. You planned. Not everyone wanted to go. Half of the cohort stayed behind. But not you. You made it out. You were being temporarily transferred to another facility for a series of measurements, and you took the opportunity. They had been training you for years, and still, somehow they underestimated all of you.

You are all Innates, and all extremely powerful. You might specialize in different fields, and your powers are often unpredictable, but with all of you working together, it was enough. You overpowered the guards, and took control of the Jumpship you were on. The Navigator of the ship was unconscious, but somehow that didn’t matter. One of you reached out and linked to the drive, untrained, without the implants, and it came to life.

That was almost a year ago, and you’ve been on the run ever since. You know you’re being followed, by bounty hunters and agents. They call themselves the Silencers. You’re not entirely sure if that’s the name of the organization that created you, or just the ones who are hunting you, but it doesn’t matter. You want to be free of them.

So you’ve come here, to the furthest possible place from the rest of civilization. You’re pretending to be a family now, ready to set down roots and make a new life. That’s all you want, really: a new life, without cages, and without being on the run. You’ve been running too long. Isn’t it finally time to rest?

Description:

Escape always seemed impossible. You barely remember your life before the facility: a crowded family cabin on a busy space station, playing hide and seek with your siblings, and the unexplainable fear in your parent’s faces when they looked at you. The facility is really where you grew up and, being almost your entire world, fleeing from that place was unthinkable. 32 was the one who dreamed of escape. Their words opened your eyes to the terrible nature of the facility, and it was 32 who not only convinced everyone to run away, but made that escape possible. Not a day goes by without you missing them terribly.

Living in the facility was a controlling life of rigid schedules, impenetrable authority, and rare glimpses of outer space. For so long you didn’t question the “truths” you were given. When your friends disappeared you were told they were moved to another part of the station, but they were never to be seen again. The training and experiments they put you through were grueling, painful, but you felt like you were part of a greater purpose. And you did well. That’s the scariest thing, looking back. Your innate abilities were powerful, and you basked in the praise, would have happily lived the life of an experiment were it not for 32.

There were more of you at the beginning of the escape. The smuggler N. Tydar ((Mike Fatum)) helped you get the jump on the guards transporting you to another facility. For a moment you were elated by the opportunity to truly use your power against your captors – but there were casualties among the experiments in the struggle, including 32. Since then, you have borrowed 32’s strength to lead the escaped experiments. You have to protect the group and stay free, for 32’s sake. There are times when you’ve failed. Another of your group was recaptured on Hinge as the rest of you barely escaped.

Now you are posing as a family of colonists. Phaelos III might finally be the end of your journey and a chance to rest, and be free. However, you are still on high alert. It seems that you have shaken your pursuers, but if you fail to remain vigilant, all you have struggled for will be lost.

Light: In the past year, you have seen so many different places, and encountered, even just briefly, many different people. You love seeing the greater universe. The freedom to be able to explore and meet new people gives you strength.

Dark: During your moments of doubt, you know that 32 should be in your position, and you should have been the one to die. 32 would actually know what to do, and would have been able to keep everyone safe. Whenever you seem to lead the others with conviction, you are just borrowing 32’s words and strength. You have to keep going, for them, but you know this was not how it was meant to be.

Questions:
  1. What was the most difficult decision you had to make during the past year?
  2. What is your style of leadership? Do you enjoy leading or is it a burden thrust upon you?
  3. If you were finally free, what would you do with your life?
  4. Who do you trust the most in the group? Who do you mistrust?
  5. What is your persona for your new life on Phaelos III?
Relations:
