Life on the run gets exhausting, but you can’t stop running. Not yet.
You don’t know who made you, and you don’t really know why. You were raised in a scientific research facility on a remote space station. You had only each other for comfort, and the scientists who did experiments on you, pushed you, made you try harder. They didn’t torture you, but they also didn’t particularly seem to care about you. You had classes, you learned about the outside world, and you were well-fed.
But a cage is a cage, and it had to break eventually. You organized. You planned. Not everyone wanted to go. Half of the cohort stayed behind. But not you. You made it out. You were being temporarily transferred to another facility for a series of measurements, and you took the opportunity. They had been training you for years, and still, somehow they underestimated all of you.
You are all Innates, and all extremely powerful. You might specialize in different fields, and your powers are often unpredictable, but with all of you working together, it was enough. You overpowered the guards, and took control of the Jumpship you were on. The Navigator of the ship was unconscious, but somehow that didn’t matter. One of you reached out and linked to the drive, untrained, without the implants, and it came to life.
That was almost a year ago, and you’ve been on the run ever since. You know you’re being followed, by bounty hunters and agents. They call themselves the Silencers. You’re not entirely sure if that’s the name of the organization that created you, or just the ones who are hunting you, but it doesn’t matter. You want to be free of them.
So you’ve come here, to the furthest possible place from the rest of civilization. You’re pretending to be a family now, ready to set down roots and make a new life. That’s all you want, really: a new life, without cages, and without being on the run. You’ve been running too long. Isn’t it finally time to rest?

You don’t remember anything before the facility. As a child, you were subjugated to strenuous exercises that challenged and developed your innate abilities. Every aspect of your life was controlled by the facility. There were only two things that brought you solace: learning about the outside world, and your friend 40 ((Mae Linh)). The two of you became friends after discovering your mutual fascination with the Ancients and their technology. 40 was one of the few people you could enjoy something with, since the oppressive environment left little room for expression or play. Under the guise of studying to please the scientists and instructors, you found a way to survive with your spirit intact.
Some of the Ancient’s technology incorporated human beings in a way that no one understood. You were fascinated by the augmented pilots who became part of ancient engines in order to fly Capital ships. Your familiarity with the Ancients and their language eventually led to your participation in several studies that involved Ancient materials. The scientists must have hypothesized that some ancient technology could be used only by Innates, or were somehow related to Innates. You enjoyed being part of these experiments which, looking back, is hard to reconcile with all the quiet horrors of the facility.
You were hungry for more knowledge, but had such little access. The instructors taught you about the galaxy, but only what you ‘needed to know’, and with suspicious gaps that made you question what was really outside the facility. You wanted out, and so did 40. The two of you connected with others who dreamed of freedom: the cold loner 33 ((Alice Lyte)), steadfast 28 ((Jenna Bergstraesser)), and 32 who orchestrated the escape. The plan was that you would take over a ship while you were being transported to a different facility, with the help of a smuggler who was posing as a guard, N. Tydar ((Mike Fatum)).
The escape was chaos. The Innates had never been in a fight before, but you were strong, too strong. In the panic there were casualties, both guards and Innates. You lost 32. But before you could process the losses, there was a more urgent matter: the pilot who you had planned to force to fly out of the system was unconscious. The ship was moored, and it was only a matter of minutes before the facility figured out that something had gone wrong. You took the pilot’s place. You shouldn’t have been able to fly it; you weren’t augmented with the ports to connect to the ancient engine. But you did. The engine became an extension of yourself, like a limb you didn’t know had been missing.
During the past year you haven’t had time to rest. However, you took every opportunity to learn about the world and the Ancients. Now you are headed to Phaelos III, a hotbed of Ancient ruins, and you couldn’t be more excited. It feels like the place you were meant to be.
Light: You have a curious nature and deep connection with the Ancients. Flying the ship unlocked something in your Innate abilities. You want that connection again. You want to understand it.
Dark: You might not ever be able to live a normal life. You haven’t been able to adjust during your ever-changing circumstances in the past year on the run. Sometimes, you wonder if you were better off back at the facility.
