Current of Memory Settlers

During the Expansion Era, the jumpship Current of Memory was known throughout the galaxy as one of the best ships of professional settlers. The mostly-Gyra crew would set out ahead of the colony capital ship, accompanied by a fleet of other Gyra jumpships. The fleet would land, establish a colony’s infrastructure and facilities, stay for a year or two, and then move on. During the first few months, the permanent colonists would arrive, and inevitably some of the Gyra would wind up staying with them.

Then the war came, and the Current of Memory was repurposed into a medical ship, carrying supplies and leading rescue efforts during battles. Most ships became warships, but not the Current. That would never have fit right. So while other ships fought, the Current played support, rescuing survivors from both sides of battles. The willingness of the Current to rescue the injured from Agerran starships as well as U.A.W. earned them the ire of some, but the appreciation of many.

That complication continued after the war. The Current and ships like it became instrumental in resettling the Gyra survivors. There were disagreements within the Gyra, though, some louder than others. Many cried out for retribution against Agerre, or reparations from Agerre. A. Ya-rett ((Richard Dupell)) emerged as the leader of that movement, one that was branded as radical and dangerous by many in the galaxy. L. Vy-an ((Chris Bergstresser)), the young Captain of the Current, emerged leading the opposition, focusing instead on taking care of the refugees who already needed places to live, without endangering that work with further radicalization. The louder Ya-rett became, the less the galaxy sympathized with the plight of the Gyra, which helped absolutely no one.

Many among the Gyra and elsewhere lashed out at Vy-an for that response, prompting them to quietly retreat from public life and visibility. In the years since then, the Current has served as a relief vessel, traveling the colonies and visiting groups of Gyra refugees across the galaxy. It has been quiet and important work, and work that is powerfully appreciated.

Now, twenty years after the end of the war, Captain Vy-an and the Current have returned to the public eye. For the first new colony in thirty years, the best settling ship was needed, and that means the Current. This is a chance to show the galaxy the value and pride of Gyra settlers in a peaceful way, a supportive way, one that doesn’t involve radical violence or outlandish demands. The Current arrived a week before the Distant Light, and worked hard, setting up things like beds, food, and basic utilities. Everything is nearly ready for the first colonists to arrive, just as it should be.

Description:
You have the weight of a world on your shoulders, and somehow, you’ve grown used to it. You are just the wrong age--old enough to remember Gyr well, but young enough to have been too young to fight in its defense. But perhaps that was for the best, as it meant you lived through the war. You grew up out in the colonies, with your cousin G. Nyr-fan ((Seamus Reynolds)). When they thought you were old enough, your parents inducted you into the Silent Conversation. They had been of the Converse on Gyr, but didn’t know what the Converse could be in a time without Gyr, without the seas. You didn’t take it too seriously at the time.

One thing led to another, and you wound up in need of work. You took a job with Enterios, and became an Augment. It was, probably unsurprisingly, miserable work. Exploitative and dangerous. You worked in a mining colony on Tona II, in horrible conditions. Augments died in work accidents on a regular basis. As far as the company was concerned, you were disposable, expendable labor. After less than a year, you and a few other Augments left Tona II and went on the run.

One by one, Enterios Reclaimers tracked down your fellow runaways, and revoked their implants. Few survived the experience. You met some other Augments, who directed you to a smuggler named I. Ryf-av ((Aaron Sunshine)). Ryf-av was also a hacker, and helped you stay ahead of the Reclaimers. Ryf-av’s work kept you alive, and let you escape from that miserable life, though the fear of a Reclaimer showing up on your door never fully abated. You still flinch sometimes when you see the Enterios logo.

More than that, though, the help of Ryf-av got you thinking. The other Augments had helped you because you were like them, and because they had a network. They talked to each other and knew each other. Ryf-av had helped you because they were Gyra, like you. On the seas, the Gyra had a network too, and now it had lapsed. You decided to bring it back, and began the long process of restarting the Silent Conversation.

You began to reach out to other Gyra, ones you trusted, ones with skills, ones with things to offer. The Conversation began anew. Over the years you’ve brought dozens of people in--Ryf-av and their cousin, L. Ryf-av ((Abigail Stone)). V. Av-ey ((Jeeyon Shim)), and her racing ship, the Windlance, who rapidly became your eyes and ears, as well as couriers, transporting people and messages for the Converse in secret. All people who were paying attention, who brought in more, who spread the word. You coordinated from remote, keeping people in touch, relaying messages and making plans. But all in secret. The galaxy was sympathetic towards the Gyra, but only for now. You’ve seen enough to know how fast sympathies can turn.

You have a few major plans, and being who you are, you’re enacting them all at once. The first is a public move, and one that might end up having the biggest impact. You contacted L. Vy-an ((Chris Bergstresser)), and convinced them to use the Current of Memory to help settle Phaelos III. It’s a PR move as much as anything, but PR matters. Vy-an knows about the Conversation, and you’ve worked together before, helping the Current know where to go to help the most refugees. You never brought Vy-an into the Conversation, though. They weren’t passionate enough, and, frankly, you didn’t trust them.

Your second plan utilizes your own cousin, and is a riskier move, but in the end may pay massive dividends. You needed a spy within Enterios, and someone with leverage. From your old Augment contacts, you heard that a build of Navigator architecture had a vulnerability. You got I. Ryf-av to hack in and disable a Navigator for Enterios’ fancy capital ship, the Distant Light. Then you had G. Nyr-fan take their place, joining Enterios as a high-level Navigator. They’ll be keeping an eye out for any serious blackmail material or insider information you might be able to use as leverage.

The final plan is the most ambitious. A. Ya-rett ((Richard Dupell)) was the loudest of the Gyra radicals in the time after the war. You never met them, but you’ve often been inspired by their teachings. Years ago, around the time you were restarting the Silent Conversation, they were arrested by the Agerrans and imprisoned in Stormgate Temple, on Zé. In long conversations with the Ryf-av cousins, you agreed that Ya-rett needed to be free. You’ve been doing good work behind the scenes for the Gyra, but you need a figurehead, a public leader.

Towards that end, the Ryf-avs found a crew of Zé smugglers. Old military records gave you the name Y. En-fi ((Ivan Wong)), a Gyra soldier who had sided with Agerre, and as best you could tell was now living on Zé, working at Stormgate. It was a gamble, but if En-fi wanted redemption, or had leftover wartime guilt, it was a chance worth taking. You gave En-fi’s name to the smugglers, and, against all odds, they claim to have pulled it off. You’re paying them the majority of what you’ve saved up through the Conversation over the years, but it’ll be worth it.

It’s all going to come together on Phaelos III. The Zé smugglers are delivering the rescued Ya-rett to the Ryf-avs. The Windlance and the Current of Memory are in the first wave of settlers, carrying the banner of Gyr for all the galaxy to see. Your cousin is in place, helping fly the Distant Light, ready to make a move and sending you anything they learn. You’ve made up your mind: Phaelos III will be the new Homeworld for the Gyra. Your people will have a sea to sail once more. It might take some maneuvering to make it happen, but you know it’ll all be worth it. The time has come for the Gyra to sail again.

Light: You’re passionate and bold, willing to fight long and hard for causes you believe in. You have a knack for bringing people together and doing the work behind the scenes to ensure things work out properly, and you’re noble and fiery in your actions and pursuits.

Dark: You’re completely willing to manipulate people to achieve your ends, even if that means withholding information from people who trust you and sending other people into danger.

Questions:
  1. What scars did your time on Tona II leave you with?
  2. Do you feel lonely, not having anyone to help share your responsibility and burden?
  3. Do you hate Agerre?
  4. What’s something you’ve done that you regret?
  5. What was your favorite thing about Gyr?
