The Windlance

The ship Windlance is many things to many people. At its simplest, it’s a racing ship, one of the fastest in the galaxy. It’s a beautiful jumpship, crafted by the finest Gyra shipbuilders, minimally armed and armored, able to go weeks without landing or docking. It’s been flying for the better of ten years, building a name, establishing an impeccable record (and quite a fan following, among people from many worlds). For the last three years, the Windlance has won the Backspin Orbit, the dangerous race through the Chained Moons, and just about every other race the ship has entered.

To many Gyra refugees across the galaxy, the Windlance is a symbol. It’s a memory of the Gyra that was, of the great ships that came before, of the power and speed and elegance of sailing the open sea. It’s a point of pride, a mark that Gyra can still do great things, even without a planet to call home. It’s a rallying cry, an inspiration, a beacon of hope.

To those who know the language, it’s the heart of what remains of the Silent Conversation. The Windlance travels from planet to planet, visiting Gyra refugee groups and leaders, carrying messages between them. The Windlance is a gathering point for those of the Converse, a way to plan quietly, to stay organized, and stay focused. For almost a decade after the destruction of Gyr, the Conversation had faded, but the Windlance has sparked the discourse again. You keep in touch with R. Nyr-fan ((remote player: Katherine Hill)), who stays on Hinge and keeps the parts of the Conversation flowing from where she is.

To you, it’s home. You might not always agree on everything--and indeed, often argue about everything, from vengeance against the Agerrans to racing strategy--but the Windlance is your home, and you’re proud of it. You’ll keep her flying as long as you can. You’ll keep the Conversation going. And you’ll win every damn race the galaxy dares to throw at you.

Description:
You always had a complicated relationship with your Homeworld. You are a Coral Child--born to Gyra parents, but far from the Homeworld. Your family were settlers who made a new life on one of the worlds they helped establish, and you were raised on a Colony, only ever hearing stories of life on Gyr.

Your best friend was a local, K. Zeikai ((Ania Slowinski)), but you fell out of touch when the war began. You saw Zeikai again years later, a few times--they became a Paladin of Dawn, and you’ve reconnected in recent years, though you don’t see eye to eye on a great many things. You’re careful to keep your less-than-legal projects out of Zeikai’s line of sight, for one thing.

When you were an adolescent on the colony, the war threatened Gyr, and you knew you had to fight for the Homeworld you had never even visited. Your colony world came under Agerran control, and that made your decision for you. You enlisted in the early days, and soon showed the kind of aptitude needed to become a Navigator. They were in high demand, with so many having sided with the Agerrans at the onset of the war. Your training was quick and focused, emphasizing getting you out and aboard a ship. You were lucky--you were assigned to a good ship, with a good captain.

Her name was Fal, and she was Gyra, born and raised. You were her right hand, her best friend, her strategist, and, from time to time, her lover. She was the best of the best, and you served her all the way through to the end of the war. She put her life on the line for you. When your jumpship’s warp drive cracked under enemy fire, she climbed inside it and patched it up by hand, exposing herself to horrifying amounts of radiation, and saving everyone on the ship.

She spent six months recovering on Gyr, and you visited her every chance you got during those months. She showed you the islands, the seas, the winds. Even with the war still raging, and her recovering, that may have been the happiest time of your life. It was there that she brought you into the Silent Conversation, introducing you to other elders of the Converse. It was a profound moment, an acknowledgement that even though you were born far from the sea, you were still a true child of Gyr.

After the war, Fal settled with many other refugees on Dor Len Sono. Not you, though. Being among the rest of the Gyra was too painful, made you think too much about what had been taken from you--that you’d never even had in the first place. You went back to your old colony once or twice, but that never felt right either. So you kept flying, taking Navigator jobs wherever you could find them, never staying on one ship too long.

Av-ey ((Jeeyon Shim)) changed that. You got a message from Fal, telling you to come to Dor Len Sono. She’d built a ship, and there was only one person she trusted to fly it. The ship was beautiful, like nothing you’d ever seen. And Av-ey… Av-ey was its Captain. You’d met Av-ey years earlier, when they were young and served in the war on your jumpship, but you hadn’t been close then. Now, Av-ey was ready.

But Fal was dying, as the cancer from her wartime radiation exposure caught up to her. It hurt to see her like that, but she’d never kept it from you--just from everyone else. You weren’t about to break that trust. So you became Av-ey’s Navigator, and together you left Fal behind, and set out into the stars again. The Windlance is Fal’s legacy, but so are you, and so is Av-ey. You’re happy to be there, as Av-ey’s right hand, first line, and advisor in all things.

Finding a new home for the Gyra is profoundly important to you. Dor Len was never the right place, any more than the colonies were. The Coral Children need a sea to call their own. The last time you saw her, Fal gave you one final mission as your Captain: find a place for the Gyra to call their own. The Windlance gives you that chance. You can visit any planet you wish, meet people, and find a home for the Gyra.

Light: Standing up for what matters is important to you, as is continuing the traditions of your people. You stand by those you care about, and will fight to keep them safe.
Dark: You can be too harsh, impatient with those who frustrate you, and have little interest in those outside your crew.
Questions:

  2. What is your relationship like with the Windlance itself?
  3. What are the most promising locations you’ve found to resettle the Gyra?
  4. How far would you go to make a new home for your people?
  5. How important is revenge on the Agerrans to you?
