Stardust Shipping / the Seventeen Hands
The law can never be all things to all people. Sometimes, things have to happen behind the scenes, under the table, and in the shadows. That’s just the way the galaxy works, and all of you know that. Not all of you work for organized crime, but all of you understand the rules of it. Keepings thing clean helps everyone stay free and profitable, and when everyone’s turning a profit, everyone’s happy.
That mostly means giving respect to the big fish--the Seventeen Hands and the Downcity Partnership. The rivalry between the two syndicates has gone on for decades, and isn’t slowing any time soon. On Din Shass, it’s open war from time to time, but when you’re offworld, you keep things clean. You don’t kill in public. You don’t pick fights with Paladins or government officials. You keep things to quiet bribes, favors for friends, and dealing technology that’s maybe not quite legal or licensed.
The Seventeen Hands are making a play for Phaelos III, and while the Partnership is sure to respond, they don’t seem to have yet. Coordinating the efforts from remote is K. Koteiv ((Sharon Underberg)), the Third Hand, with G. Nova ((Nancy Calvert-Warren)), the Eleventh Hand, running the show on the ground. For two of the Hands to be personally involved means serious business, and anyone involved on Phaelos knows it. But of course, the general public doesn’t know the Hands are here, and doesn’t need to. As far as most folk know, you’re here to help Stardust Shipping establish a new trade route, and nothing sketchier than that.

Description:
First and foremost, you’re a soldier. You always have been. That’s the life you were raised for, and that’s the life you knew best. You came of age on Agerre during the Homeworld War, and you fought proudly on the front lines. You fought alongside a host of other soldiers, including E. Taiv ((Ross Cheung)), who always had your back. When an opportunity came to even better serve your planet, you leapt at it, and signed up to be trained as a Navigator.
As it turned out, you were excellent at it, and soon you were promoted from Jumpship Navigator to helping steer a capital ship. There were three of you--you, Avia, and Koteiv ((Sharon Underberg)). Together, you piloted one of the best ships of the line through some of the most brutal battles of the war. The three of you didn’t always see eye to eye, but the more you flew together, the more you became of one mind, linked by the ship’s drive.
The end of the war almost ended you as well. You were there when Gyr burned, your ship launching a frontal assault on the orbital shipyards. In that battle, the ship took massive damage, with multiple impacts near the warp core. As Gyr’s surface turned molten, the call came from the captain to retreat. The three of you argued, with Koteiv calling to abandon ship, saying the drive was too damaged, while Avia insisted there was one more jump in her. You were the deciding vote, and you did what you always do: you followed the captain’s orders.
Avia was right, technically. The ship did make that last jump, but Avia didn’t. The backlash from keeping the warp drive running killed Avia outright, and crippled Koteiv. You were the only one to come through unscathed--physically, at least. Linked as you were, you felt Koteiv’s agony. You felt Avia die. In the following days, you found out that your attack had just been a distraction for the real attack. That was all. Your ship was scuttled and your partners ruined over a distraction. Worse--one that worked too well. Agerre declared the war over.
You were left adrift, betrayed by your Homeworld and without your partners. Koteiv wouldn’t speak to you, blaming you for their injuries. You became a soldier for hire, serving as a bodyguard for whoever would take you on. You passed most of the next few decades that way. You’re a soldier, after all. You don’t know how to do much else.
G. Nova ((Nancy Calvert-Warren)) is the best boss you’ve had yet. She’s fair to you, and your life with her is never boring. Too many times, you wound up protecting sleazy Ottsalian businessmen who never got in danger more exciting than tripping on their way down the stairs. But life with Nova is never boring. Working with the Hands has also meant that for the first time in two decades, you’re in contact with Koteiv again. They’ve become a leader of the Hands. You’re impressed. You weren’t sure you’d ever see them again.
Right now, you’re a little irritated at Nova. They had you pilot some pile of scrap to get back to this planet. The Pearl Ambassador is a disgusting ship, and honestly, you were embarrassed to fly it. You were meant to fly capital ships, not this… filth. Its captain, M. Nadir ((Dave White)), is a ball of slime, a selfish insect who looks out for himself, and wouldn’t know what to do in a real fight any more than a Baryosi bureaucrat would survive the Sunwalk. But you got the Ambassador here, and Nova’s paying you plenty for it.
Light: You’re a soldier, and you’re proud of that. You fought on the right side of the war, and you were loyal to your fellows-in-arms, even if the government turned out not to be loyal to you.
Dark: The years have made you cynical and bitter, and mostly these days you only look out for yourself. You assume two things about the people you meet: sooner or later, everybody lies and everybody dies.

Questions:
- What was your Sunwalk like?
- What was your worst job after the war like?
- Is there anyone you genuinely trust?
- Have you been back to Agerre since the war?
- Are there moral lines you won’t cross? Things you consider too far?
