The Colonial Congress

Representatives from all three major governing powers have come with the new colonists, in order to help establish the beginnings of a colonial government. You are here as part of the Colonial Congress faction. First and foremost, you are here to support the colony in its earliest days. You want to see Phaelos III establish itself, stabilize, and begin to find its identity as a society and a culture. You are strongly independent, and care much more for the colony and the colonists than about larger questions of interplanetary war. You can already tell that the Commonwealth and Galactic League factions are going to bog themselves down in partisan bickering, and honestly, you're perfectly fine with that. While they keep themselves busy with squabbling, you'll make sure the actual business of running the colony happens smoothly.

Of course, you're hopeful that when the time comes to choose, the colonists will vote for Phaelos III to join the Colonial Congress, but honestly that's not as important to you as them being happy with the choice they make. You're willing to support alternate proposals, including potentially one you've heard about Phaelos III becoming a second homeworld for the Gyra refugees. When it comes to day-to-day politics, your primary interests are those that support the colonists and their lives. Your focus is on social welfare, medical access, and supporting the arts and humanities. When the people are happy and cared for, the colony thrives.

Description:
Your parents always taught you to be proud of who you were and what you could do, but reality seemed to prove them wrong, time and again. Your powers emerged as a young child on a small Colony, far from the war you knew was raging. Your parents encouraged you to practice with them, but you were worried other kids would treat you differently. Then the end of the war came, and suddenly people were scared of Innates. You tried to keep your powers secret, but it couldn’t last. When you were an adolescent, there was a natural disaster, and in a moment of panic, you used your powers to save your friends.

They turned on you, and the rest of the town turned with them. You were called a freak, a monster. People said you were a danger to the public, that you’d destroy the whole planet if left unchecked. Your family packed up and fled, changing your names and relocating to Windrock, to the capital city where you could hide and be anonymous. You hated it. You hated leaving your friends behind, you hated having to hide, you hated being in this massive city.

For a miserable decade, you stayed in hiding. Then you met R. Sano La ((Melissa Milton)), a philosopher originally from Dor Len Sono. The two of you became friends, and eventually revealed to each other that you were both Innates. The two of you started reaching out, trying to find other Innates, but to little avail. In the wake of the Homeworld War, just like you two had, most Innates had gone to ground and hidden thoroughly.

As you looked, though, you realized just how badly the galaxy was falling to pieces. Even the Colonial Congress was full of bickering and infighting. Sano La encouraged you to follow up on your other natural talent--building connections and talking to people. You were tired of hiding, and tired of feeling like you couldn’t make a difference about anything, so on Sano La’s encouragement, you ran for public office.

That began a career that has brought you further and further into the public eye, to your mixed pleasure and discomfort. You have worked hard to keep your powers secret, as you fear public opinion turning on you as it once did. But at the same time, you feel like you’re making a difference, at least in small ways. You worked your way up through city governance, and are now a part of the Windrock Delegation to the Congress itself. You’re not a Speaking Third, but people have started to mention you as someone who could be elected one at some point in the future. You find the work rewarding, even if the people you find yourself working with aren’t always.

You’ve also begun to find other Innates, and quietly connect them to one another. You and Sano La call this nascent network the Weave. It’s not a formal organization, which is fine, but rather a discontinuous support network. The idea is to make sure Innates have people they can talk to, and places they can go if they need to get out of a tricky situation. One member is M. Arno Ka ((April Padilla)), a Dor Len scientist and Innate, who helps with things behind the scenes when they can. Another is N. Ransha ((Stephanie DeMane)), a reporter for the Bulletin. Ransha isn’t an Innate themself, but wants to help find and support other Innates, and has become a good friend to you over the last few years.

You’re hoping to make more connections for the Weave, but it’s a delicate balance. You know that historically the Order of Dawn has been friendly towards Innates, but you don’t know many Dawnlighters personally. You know they’re going to have representatives on Phaelos III, and finding sympathetic people among them is a high priority. They could be powerful allies to the Weave, as long as they can be trusted.

The latest complication to your life is K. Zapor ((Jenna Brotsky)). Zapor is a scientist and occasional member of various advisory boards for the Congress, brought in by E. Spindle ((Blair Fullerton)), a financier for the Congress. You and Zapor worked together on a series of proposals to the Congress regarding handling of Ancient ruins. At first you seemed to disagree about everything, but as time went on you realized that you actually did agree about quite a bit--you just came from different backgrounds, and had very different ways of communicating. It wasn’t long after that that a late-night argument turned into a night of passion.

But those pesky communication styles got in the way, and as soon as the proposals were done, you and Zapor went your separate ways. You couldn’t get them off your mind, though, and now here they are, part of the mission to Phaelos III. You’re going to have to figure out how to work with them, and how to talk to them. You’re trying to keep your mind focused on the work at hand--building the colony, bringing it into the Congress, expanding the Weave--but Zapor is a persistent (and delightful!) distraction.

Light: You are fundamentally powerful and will always use that power to save people, no matter what the consequences may be to you personally. You’re willing to put in the work to make a positive difference.

Dark: You’re terrified of rejection and vulnerability, and will hide who you are if you think it will protect you.

Questions:
  1. Do you want to seek out a relationship with Zapor?
  2. Do you feel dishonest, hiding your powers from your constituencies and fellow politicians?
  3. How much of your mistreatment as a child have you internalized, and what scars did that leave you with?
  4. Do you like being Innate?
  5. What are your political goals?
