The Performers

What is a galaxy without art? Not one worth saving, obviously. You are the dashing, the bold, the brave, the creative. You are a group of artists who have joined the Distant Light for one reason: to bring art to Phaelos III, a world that has not known it for thousands of years. Of course, it’s also a massive publicity stunt. The eyes of all the galaxy will be on Phaelos III, and you’re all here to perform the first big art shows, put on the first concerts, and make your names go down as legends. After all, isn’t that what art is all about?

SECRET GROUP: The Silencers

Seventy years ago, the experimental starship Falls The Shadow set out from Baryos on a mission to study the Horizon, the supermassive black hole at the heart of the Circinus Galaxy. Leading that expedition were Dr. Yana Kyr, an astrophysicist, and Captain Alecto Glass, of the U.A.W. Navy. As far as the public is aware, the ship was lost with all hands, and Glass and Kyr died somewhere in deep space.

The truth is much more complex than that. After a ten year voyage, the Falls The Shadow returned to known space, with Kyr and Glass among its only survivors. Captain Glass looked into the Horizon, and saw the end coming for all life. The Horizon is expanding, and will someday consume the entire galaxy. This likely will not happen for billions of years, but Glass became consumed by her obsession with the Horizon. The Horizon is more than just a black hole--it is a wormhole, with something beyond it. Captain Glass believes that if she can throw enough mass into it--planets, suns, entire solar systems--it will stabilize enough to traverse.

This is, of course, completely mad, but Glass took control of the Falls The Shadow and its surviving crew, and has been attempting to do just that for the last sixty years. She is still alive, her body so cybernetically altered that it is now just part of the ship. Her agents, the Splinters, operate in secret across the galaxy, working on nefarious engineering and research projects.

Standing against her are Dr. Yana Kyr and her followers, called the Silencers. Kyr coordinates from her own flagship, the Dead Man’s Hand, which moves from system to system, always in secret. No one has seen Kyr herself in person for years, but her orders continue to arrive. The Silencers have two major goals. First, they must keep the knowledge of the Horizon and the actions of the Splinters secret, in order to prevent widespread apocalyptic panic. Second, they must find ways to counteract Glass’s plan, and return to the Horizon to study it further.

The Silencers use biological alteration to keep up with the augmentations of the Splinters. Their main projects over the last few decades have been focused on Innates--understanding them, studying them, and improving them. The current project’s end goal has been to develop an Innate that can interface with a warp drive with no cybernetic enhancements, something Kyr theorizes will allow for closer approaches to the Horizon.

The project is nearing completion, but a group of experimental Innate subjects have escaped from their facility and gone on the run. Tracking them down has become a number one priority for all Silencers across the galaxy. Ideally, they will be brought in alive and ready for additional study. But if necessary, it is vital that they not fall into the hands of Splinters… even if that means their elimination.

Homeworld: Ottsalia
Variant: Evo

Description:
In your life, there is no such thing as “over the top.” Some people fear flamboyance, but you have never been one of them. You are on an endless quest to find the top and go higher, and it has gone well so far. You are a performance artist, doing art of all kinds, on a grand scale. You dance, you make sculptures, you do huge installation pieces, and you do weird avant-garde performance pieces. Those ones are your favorites. You’re known throughout the galaxy, though you’re more popular on Ottsalia and Baryos than on Zé and Agerre.

That’s as much as the public knows about you, anyway. And to be clear, it’s certainly all true… but that’s only one small piece of the Starflower story. Your mother was the leader of the Kin, one of the three great crime syndicates. As the Homeworld War was ending, however, she tried to take power from the Seventeen Hands and the Downcity Partnership. Her move failed, as the two set aside their differences and killed her and her fellow leaders of the Kin.

You were an adolescent at the time, and you were smart enough to go to ground with as many resources as you could get your hands on. As far as the Hands and the Partnership know, there are no Kin left. You are the last of them. You’ve long wanted revenge on the Hands and the Partnership, but you’ve been patient. You’re paying attention, though, and you know members of the leadership of both will be on Phaelos III. G. Nova ((Nancy Calvert-Warren)) is one of the numbered Hands, though you’re not sure which. Fourteen, maybe? Meanwhile, E. Spindle ((Blair Fullerton)) is a high-ranking member of the Partnership, posing as a banker. You would love to take them both down. Just killing them would be too quick and too simple, though. You want to make them suffer, and use them to get at the rest of their organization. That will be much more interesting.

There are things that make that possible. You found the Silencers, or perhaps they found you, and you cut a deal with them. You brought the remainder of the resources of the Kin to them, and in return they’ve supported you and kept you safe from any prying eyes of the Hands or Partnership. And as time has gone on, you’ve started to like what they stand for. Saving the galaxy is good, you like that. You live in the galaxy, after all.

You’ve also always been fascinated by the potential of Augments. You yourself are an Evo, but machines, ah… there’s so much to be worked with, so many ways to manipulate a machine. You reached out a while ago to L. Auberro ((Jules Robins)), an Augment rights activist. Auberro thinks you’re supporting them as they try to keep Augments safe, but the truth is much more fun. You know Auberro used to work for Enterios in their Augmentation division. If anyone can get you a back way into Augments so you can hack them and take control of them, it’ll be Auberro.

About a year ago, you managed to get your hands on an android of your own. A. Aleph ((Robert Wynn)) is an android built by X. Amaranth ((Abe Pressman)), a brilliant engineer. Amaranth gave you Aleph as a publicity stunt, but also as a shrewd piece of research design. By traveling with you, Aleph builds up an extensive data file of observations and sensory data, which they can eventually bring back to Amaranth, to help make future androids even better. Of course, you quickly hired a hacker to make sure Aleph was only recording when you wanted them to be. Now you’ve got a pet android of your own, to serve as your personal assistant, secretary, and occasionally manager for negotiating with art venues. Very useful.

For the trip to Phaelos, you recruited a pair of bodyguards. You’re going to be surrounded by the Hands and the Partners both, and that’s dangerous. It’s worth shelling out a few extra credits for extra safety. But the bodyguards you found… well, they’re not exactly typical. H. Journeyman ((Jack Phillips)) and D. Lim Baro ((Hazel Court)) seem to think they’re performing with you, rather than protecting you. They don’t make you feel much safer, but they certainly entertain you. As long as they don’t get in the way of your revenge, you’re quite happy having them tag along on your journey.

Light:
You look at the galaxy with eyes of wonder. Everything has some sort of beauty in it, it’s just a matter of perspective and finding how to bring it out.
Dark:
With your quest to find beauty in everything, some things get in the way, and they must be removed so that beauty will persist. There is no method too radical if the end result is more beauty.
Questions:
  1. What has been your greatest performance yet?
  2. How would you bring beauty to the galaxy next?
  3. Why would you listen to arguments about law and rules?
  4. How could you make your revenge into a beautiful performance?
Relations:
G. Nova ((Nancy Calvert-Warren))
E. Spindle ((Blair Fullerton))
A. Aleph ((Robert Wynn))
H. Journeyman ((Jack Phillips))
D. Lim Baro ((Hazel Court))
