Current of Memory Settlers
During the Expansion Era, the jumpship Current of Memory was known throughout the galaxy as one of the best ships of professional settlers. The mostly-Gyra crew would set out ahead of the colony capital ship, accompanied by a fleet of other Gyra jumpships. The fleet would land, establish a colony’s infrastructure and facilities, stay for a year or two, and then move on. During the first few months, the permanent colonists would arrive, and inevitably some of the Gyra would wind up staying with them.
Then the war came, and the Current of Memory was repurposed into a medical ship, carrying supplies and leading rescue efforts during battles. Most ships became warships, but not the Current. That would never have fit right. So while other ships fought, the Current played support, rescuing survivors from both sides of battles. The willingness of the Current to rescue the injured from Agerran starships as well as U.A.W. earned them the ire of some, but the appreciation of many.
That complication continued after the war. The Current and ships like it became instrumental in resettling the Gyra survivors. There were disagreements within the Gyra, though, some louder than others. Many cried out for retribution against Agerre, or reparations from Agerre. A. Ya-rett ((Richard Dupell)) emerged as the leader of that movement, one that was branded as radical and dangerous by many in the galaxy. L. Vy-an ((Chris Bergstresser)), the young Captain of the Current, emerged leading the opposition, focusing instead on taking care of the refugees who already needed places to live, without endangering that work with further radicalization. The louder Ya-rett became, the less the galaxy sympathized with the plight of the Gyra, which helped absolutely no one.
Many among the Gyra and elsewhere lashed out at Vy-an for that response, prompting them to quietly retreat from public life and visibility. In the years since then, the Current has served as a relief vessel, traveling the colonies and visiting groups of Gyra refugees across the galaxy. It has been quiet and important work, and work that is powerfully appreciated.
Now, twenty years after the end of the war, Captain Vy-an and the Current have returned to the public eye. For the first new colony in thirty years, the best settling ship was needed, and that means the Current. This is a chance to show the galaxy the value and pride of Gyra settlers in a peaceful way, a supportive way, one that doesn’t involve radical violence or outlandish demands. The Current arrived a week before the Distant Light, and worked hard, setting up things like beds, food, and basic utilities. Everything is nearly ready for the first colonists to arrive, just as it should be.

Description:
There’s a lot you don’t remember, these days. You know your life used to be different, wildly different, but a lot of the details are vague, blurry, like trying to watch a vidscreen with too much static. You know you were a Navigator, working for the Enterios Corporation. You weren’t just any Navigator, either. You were amazing at it, and taught other Navigators. For a while you even flew a capital ship, the Distant Light, together with one of your old pupils, F. Karali ((Lionel Honda)), and their own student, B. Ana Rous ((Christina Wong)). You remember liking that.
Then the accident happened. You still don’t know exactly what it was. Karali told you later that you had a panic attack while in warp, and almost died of adrenal overload and warp feedback. You were taken off of piloting duty, taken away from the Distant Light, and spent months in the hospital and in physical therapy, learning to use your body again.
The accident also did things to your mind. Maybe it was being in warp, maybe it was your implants, you don’t know, but nowadays, you have difficulty with time. And the truth is? You don’t mind. You don’t dwell on the past, and you don’t think about the future. You act on impulse and on instinct, going where you want, doing what captures your fancy. You don’t worry too much about consequences. It’s not that you can’t think about those things, it just takes a lot of effort.
A month ago, you got offered a job flying again, and you leapt at the opportunity. The Current of Memory is a strange ship, but you like it. The people are charming and odd, and welcomed you warmly. They made you feel like part of a family. E. Rett-an ((Rodney Kelly)) and S. Hapézu ((Elias Turner)) are hilarious and endearing, and love to tell you stories. You don’t always follow them clearly, but they delight you nonetheless. Hapézu’s music in particular is beautiful, and helps you stay focused. Hapézu has taken to playing for you while you plot warp jumps.
Sometimes you have moments where you miss your old life, but in truth, you suspect it was an unhappy life. You know you were proud of your work, but you also remember the pain, and the fear. A painful reminder of that came with a message from C. Adamant ((Josh Brown)), a Reclaimer for the Enterios Corporation. The terms of your initial contract with them, now several decades old, still binds you, as it turns out. Despite your medical condition making it impossible for you to continue working for them, you still owe them a remaining balance on the debt for your initial implants. But that’s not something you want to focus on worrying about, so you don’t. Did you worry about that before the accident? You don’t remember.
When you dream, every so often you have odd dreams, of other lives that aren’t yours. You remember a royal household on Dor Len Sono, and mourning a mother who died in the Homeworld War. You remember an older sister who left you, a Dor Len Princess who abandoned you, a childhood on Baryos you never had. When you take the time to ponder it, you think these might be the memories of Karali and Ana Rous, somehow mixed with yours through the warp drive.
But most days, you don’t dwell on that, or what they’ve been doing since your accident. Mostly you just live, and enjoy life with your newfound friends. You’re bitter about the accident, of course. So much of your life has been taken from you, and your body will never work quite right again. But without that accident, you never would have found these incredible people, and this wonderful community. It’s a bittersweet emotion, but one that has left you with a family you’ll do just about anything to stay with and protect.
Light: You’re kind and you care very much about your newfound family; you’re happy to follow along on whatever journeys they make and would do anything to ensure their safety and happiness.
Dark: You have a past and a set of experiences that you remember almost nothing about, and that frightens you. Consequently, you avoid thinking about it as much as possible, preferring to live a life that’s shallow and fanciful, ignoring consequences and trusting others to make the hard choices for you.
